What a locksmith change order is for

Locksmith jobs change at the door: a worn cylinder that will not take new pins, a door with no bore for a deadbolt, or a customer who adds the shed lock. A quick written change before the extra work protects your reputation in a trade where surprise charges are the main complaint.

What to put on a locksmith change order

  • The original price.
  • What was found or added.
  • Added and removed lines.
  • The new total.
  • Approval before continuing.

A worked example

The back door cylinder is too worn to rekey and must be replaced. The customer adds the side gate padlock and skips the garage entry door.

Show the customer the worn cylinder. A visible reason makes a changed price easy to accept.

FAQ

When does a locksmith need a change order?

When hardware cannot be serviced as planned, a door needs extra work, or the customer adds or drops locks.

How do I avoid looking like a scammer?

Give the price before work and get approval before any change. Write it down. Surprise charges are what customers fear.

Can I credit dropped locks?

Yes. A minus quantity takes them off the total. The customer sees the added padlock and the skipped door on one page, so the total makes sense.

Should I show the customer worn parts?

Yes. Seeing a worn cylinder explains the change better than words. Keep the old part to hand back to the customer if they want it.
