What a garage door change order is for

Garage door repairs uncover more once the tension is off: a cracked bottom bracket, a bent track section, a drum worn smooth. A change order with the finding and the price, approved before you install the extra part, keeps the repair honest. It also records upgrades the customer chooses on the spot.

What to put on a garage door change order

  • The original estimate.
  • What was found or requested.
  • Added parts and credits.
  • The new total.
  • Approval before continuing.

A worked example

With the springs off, the tech finds a rusted bottom bracket and a bent track section. The customer also skips the rollers.

Show the customer the rusted bracket before replacing it. A failing bracket under spring tension is a safety issue, and a photo makes that clear.

FAQ

When does a garage door repair need a change order?

When more worn or damaged parts are found, or the customer upgrades or drops parts. Approve before installing extra parts.

How do I explain a safety part to a customer?

Show it, say what happens if it fails under spring tension, and price it. Customers understand when they see rust or a crack.

Can a customer drop parts mid-repair?

Yes, if it is safe. Enter the dropped part with a minus quantity and the total updates. Never leave a door in an unsafe state because a part was declined.

Should I photograph damaged parts?

Yes. Photos back up the change and protect you if the customer questions the bill later. They also help the next tech see what was done.
