What an irrigation change order is for

Irrigation plans meet reality at the tap: water pressure lower than expected means more zones, a rock layer slows trenching, or the customer adds a bed they want watered. A change order with the reason and the price, signed before the extra work, keeps the system right and the bill fair.

What to put on an irrigation change order

  • The original estimate.
  • What was found or requested.
  • Added zones or work.
  • Credits.
  • The new total.
  • Signature before the extra work.

A worked example

Pressure at the meter is lower than expected, so the lawn needs one more zone. The customer adds a drip zone for new raised beds and drops the rain sensor.

Record the pressure reading in the notes. It explains the extra zone better than any paragraph.

FAQ

When does an irrigation job need a change order?

When pressure or flow changes the zone count, trenching hits rock or roots, or the customer adds or drops zones or parts.

Why would low pressure add a zone?

Each zone can only run as many heads as the pressure and flow support. Less pressure means fewer heads per zone, so more zones.

Can I credit parts the customer drops?

Yes. Enter the dropped part, such as a rain sensor, with a minus quantity and the template takes it off the change total, so the new price is clear before the crew digs.

Should I measure pressure before the estimate?

Yes, if you can. It reduces surprises, though readings can change with the time of day. Measure at the meter and at a hose bib for a fuller picture.
