What a change order is
A change order is a signed addition to the original estimate or contract. It records a change in scope, the price of that change and any effect on the schedule. Without one, extra work turns into an argument at the final invoice.
What to put on it
- The original estimate or contract number, and its amount.
- What changed and why: found on site, asked for by the customer, or required by the inspector.
- Each added line with its price, and any credit for work taken out.
- The new contract total.
- Days added to the schedule, if any.
- Signatures from both sides before the changed work starts.
Credits
When the customer drops part of the job, show it as a credit. In this template a credit is a line with a minus quantity, so it comes off the change total. A change order can lower the price as well as raise it.
