What a locksmith work order is for

A locksmith must check ID before opening anything, and the work order is where that check is recorded. For commercial jobs, it also carries the key schedule and hardware list, so the tech arrives with the right cylinders and pins. The sign-off records that the right person approved the work.

What to put on a locksmith work order

  • Address and contact.
  • The job and the doors.
  • ID to check.
  • Hardware and keys to bring.
  • Key schedule for commercial work.
  • Sign-off.

FAQ

What should a locksmith work order include?

The address, the job and doors, the ID check, hardware and keys to bring, the key schedule for commercial jobs, and a sign-off.

Why record the ID check?

It protects you if anyone later questions why you opened or rekeyed a lock. Write whose ID and what kind.

What is a key schedule?

A list of which keys open which doors in a master key system. It is planned before pinning.

Should commercial jobs need owner approval?

Yes. Get approval from the owner or an authorized manager in writing. A text from a random employee is not enough to rekey an office.
