What a fence work order is for

A fence in the wrong place is the most expensive mistake a crew can make. The work order puts the property pins, the gate locations and which way they swing, the utility marks and the sprinkler lines on one page with the material list. The crew lead checks the line against it before the first hole.

What to put on a fence work order

  • Fence line and property pins.
  • Post spacing and height.
  • Gate locations, widths and swing direction.
  • Utility marks and private lines.
  • Old fence removal and haul.
  • What to protect.

FAQ

What should a fence work order include?

The fence line and property pins, post spacing and height, gate locations with swing direction, utility marks, private lines, removal, and what to protect.

Why note gate swing direction?

A gate that swings the wrong way into a slope or a walkway is a redo. Writing it down prevents it.

Should the crew confirm the line with the owner?

Yes. A quick walk with the owner before digging confirms the line and puts the responsibility where it belongs.

What if a post hole hits a line?

Stop and call. The work order should list known utilities and private lines so this rarely happens. Private lines like sprinklers and dog fences are the ones most often hit.
