What a deck work order is for

Deck crews build from a sketch more than a set of plans. A work order that fixes the layout off the house, footing spots, beam and joist sizes, ledger flashing, decking direction and stair location means the inspector sees what the permit shows and the owner gets the deck they signed for.

What to put on a deck work order

  • Layout dimensions from the house.
  • Footing locations and depth.
  • Beam, joist size and spacing.
  • Ledger fastening and flashing.
  • Decking direction and fasteners.
  • Railing height and stair location.

Put the inspection booking in site notes. Pouring footings before the footing inspection can mean digging them out.

FAQ

What goes on a deck work order?

Layout from the house, footing locations and depth, framing sizes and spacing, ledger fastening and flashing, decking direction, railing and stairs.

Why photograph the ledger?

Flashing and fasteners disappear under decking. A photo proves they are right if a leak or an inspector asks later.

Should inspections be on the deck work order?

Yes. Footing and framing inspections are holds in the schedule, and the crew needs to know not to cover the work first.

Do deck crews need to see the price?

No. The crew copy leaves out prices and keeps the sheet to layout, footings, framing sizes, flashing and safety, which is all the framers need on site.
