What a general contractor work order is for

A GC coordinates many subcontractors who each need the same site rules and the right plan revision. A work order per phase or sub, with the scope, schedule, inspections and site rules, keeps trades from tripping over each other and makes sure the inspector sees what the plans show.

What to put on a general contractor work order

  • Phase and scope for the sub.
  • Plans and revision to use.
  • Schedule and sequence.
  • Site rules: hours, parking, toilets, dust.
  • Inspections and who calls them.
  • Safety requirements.

Put the plan revision and the site hours in site notes. A sub working from an old revision is a costly mistake.

FAQ

What should a GC work order include?

The phase and scope, plan revision, schedule, site rules, inspections and safety requirements. One work order per sub keeps the scope and the rules clear for each trade.

Why note the plan revision?

Plans change during permitting and construction. Building from an old revision causes failed inspections and rework. Write the revision number on every work order.

Who calls inspections?

Say on the work order. Often the GC calls them after each sub confirms their work is ready.

How do I share work orders with subs?

Save as PDF and text it, or keep phases on the job in Koira where subs can see them.
