What a remodeling receipt is for
Remodel customers pay large sums over weeks, sometimes from a home equity line or a construction loan that wants proof of each draw. A receipt for each payment with the running balance is what the lender and the homeowner both need. It also saves the homeowner from digging through bank statements later.
What to put on a remodeling receipt
- Amount, date and method.
- Which milestone or deposit it covers.
- Payments to date and balance remaining.
- The project address.
A worked example
The homeowner paid the deposit on the bath remodel by bank transfer. Type it in Amount received.
| Line | Qty | Unit | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary bathroom remodel, per signed contract | 1 | each | Your price |
| Change order 1, approved at signing | 1 | each | Your price |
Each receipt should show the payments so far. A lender releasing draws asks for exactly that.

Terms and deposit language for remodeling
- Deposit. A deposit at signing secures the schedule and orders long-lead items like cabinets. Many states limit home improvement deposits and require specific contract language, so check your state's rules.
- Payment. Progress payments tied to milestones such as demolition, rough-in inspection, cabinets set and substantial completion, with a final payment after the punch list.
- Warranty. State your workmanship warranty and that products carry their makers' warranties. Say how warranty requests are made.
- Allowances: if the customer picks items above the allowance, the difference is a change order.
- Hidden conditions behind walls and floors are priced by change order before the work.
- Lead times for cabinets, tile and fixtures can move the schedule; say how you communicate it.
How to fill it in
- Fill in who paid and which job or invoice the payment is for.
- Check the lines; they show what the payment covers.
- Pick how they paid and add the check or reference number.
- Type the amount received, or leave it blank when it pays the whole total.
- Print it, download it, or hand it over as a PDF.
