What a drywall receipt is for
Drywall work is often paid by a builder or a homeowner in stages, and both want a receipt per payment that shows the running balance. For insurance repairs after a leak, the receipt is part of the homeowner's claim. Builders also use them to release lender draws.
What to put on a drywall receipt
- Amount, date and method.
- The stage or repair paid.
- Payments to date and balance.
- Insurance claim number if relevant.
A worked example
A homeowner paid by card for a ceiling repair after a bathroom leak above, and needs a receipt for the insurance claim.
| Line | Qty | Unit | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drywall patch, large, water damaged ceiling | 1 | each | Your price |
| Texture match | 1 | each | Your price |
| Prime for paint | 40 | sq ft | Your price |
Put the cause, a leak from the bathroom above, and the claim number in the notes. The adjuster asks for both.

Terms and deposit language for drywall
- Deposit. A deposit at signing covers board and mud and holds the crew. Rules on how much you may collect up front differ by state, so look yours up.
- Payment. Larger jobs split at hang complete and finish complete; small repairs are due on completion.
- Warranty. Say how long you cover cracks and nail pops from your workmanship, and that settling, framing movement and water damage are not covered.
- Finish level and texture are agreed in writing before work starts.
- Painting is by others unless listed; primer is included only if listed.
- Ceilings in older homes may contain asbestos; testing is required before disturbing them, and abatement is by licensed others.
How to fill it in
- Fill in who paid and which job or invoice the payment is for.
- Check the lines; they show what the payment covers.
- Pick how they paid and add the check or reference number.
- Type the amount received, or leave it blank when it pays the whole total.
- Print it, download it, or hand it over as a PDF.
