What an insulation receipt is for
Insulation is one of the few trades with a federal rule on what the receipt says. Use this receipt when the invoice was paid separately, or when an energy program wants a standalone record. It also staples to the attic hatch card many installers leave, so the next person who looks knows what is up there.
What to put on an insulation receipt
- The payment, its date and its form.
- Coverage area and where.
- Thickness, R-value, settled depth and bags.
- Installer's signature and date.
A worked example
Payment received for the attic job by card. Enter it in Amount received and add the depths and bag count to the notes.
| Line | Qty | Unit | Price | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blown-in (fiberglass or cellulose), attic * | 1,000 | sq ft | $1.66 | $1,660.00 |
| Air sealing, top plates and penetrations | 4 | hour | Your price |
Leave a copy stapled near the attic hatch as well. The next person in the attic will thank you.

Terms and deposit language for insulation
- Deposit. On larger jobs a deposit is due at signing for spray foam or a large bag order. Each state sets home improvement deposit rules, so look up yours.
- Payment. Balance due when the work is done and the receipt with coverage, depth and R-value is handed over.
- Warranty. You warrant coverage and depth as recorded on the receipt. Settling is accounted for in the installed depth. Damage from roof leaks or pests is not covered.
- The receipt shows coverage area, thickness and R-value, and for loose-fill the settled thickness and bag count.
- Attic access, storage and anything in the way are the owner's to clear unless listed here.
- Knob and tube wiring or signs of mold found in the attic stop the job until it is addressed.
How to fill it in
- Fill in who paid and which job or invoice the payment is for.
- Check the lines; they show what the payment covers.
- Pick how they paid and add the check or reference number.
- Type the amount received, or leave it blank when it pays the whole total.
- Print it, download it, or hand it over as a PDF.
