What a drywall invoice is for

Drywall jobs are often billed in stages, hang then finish, and the customer wants to see which stage they are paying for and what came before. On repairs, the invoice should list each patch so the customer can walk the house and check them off.

What to put on a drywall invoice

  • The stage or the full scope.
  • Area hung and finished.
  • Patches or repairs, each listed.
  • Extras approved on site.
  • Payments received and the balance.

A worked example

The basement finish stage is complete. The owner added two closet interiors while the crew was there. The hang stage was paid already.

Put the hang stage payment in Already paid. The closets carry a note that the owner added them, so the extra is no surprise.

Terms and deposit language for drywall

  • Deposit. A deposit at signing covers board and mud and holds the crew. Rules on how much you may collect up front differ by state, so look yours up.
  • Payment. Larger jobs split at hang complete and finish complete; small repairs are due on completion.
  • Warranty. Say how long you cover cracks and nail pops from your workmanship, and that settling, framing movement and water damage are not covered.
  • Finish level and texture are agreed in writing before work starts.
  • Painting is by others unless listed; primer is included only if listed.
  • Ceilings in older homes may contain asbestos; testing is required before disturbing them, and abatement is by licensed others.

FAQ

How do drywall contractors bill in stages?

Commonly a deposit, a payment at hang complete and the balance at finish complete. Each invoice shows what was paid before and what this payment covers.

What goes on a drywall repair invoice?

Each patch with its location and size, texture matching, any priming, and the total. The customer can walk the house and check each one.

How do I invoice work added on site?

As separate lines with a note that the owner asked for them, ideally after a quick written approval.

When should I send the final drywall invoice?

After the finish is sanded and walked with the customer or the builder, before painters arrive and any new marks appear.
