What a 3D printing estimate is for

People who order printed parts often know the slicer says a few dollars of plastic and expect to pay about that. A quote that shows the part price next to file prep, a first article, finishing and a setup fee explains where the time goes. It also writes down the material, layer height and tolerance, so the parts that ship match what was agreed.

What to put on a 3D printing estimate

  • Each part or design, with quantity.
  • Process and material, color and layer height.
  • File prep or design time if the file needs work.
  • Test print before a run.
  • Finishing: supports removed, sanded, primed or painted.
  • Setup fee, minimum order and any rush.
  • Shipping or pickup.

A worked example

A small electronics maker sends a STEP file for an enclosure and wants one test print, then twenty in black PETG.

The test print is its own line so the run only starts after the customer checks fit. Note that approval on the job.

Terms and deposit language for 3D printing

  • Deposit. For runs and custom design work, ask for a deposit before printing starts, since printed parts are made for one customer.
  • Payment. Balance due before shipping or at pickup.
  • Warranty. You warrant that parts match the approved file and test print within your stated tolerances. Fit in the customer's assembly, load ratings and heat resistance are the customer's to check.
  • Parts are printed from the file the customer approves; errors in a supplied file are the customer's.
  • Color and surface finish can vary between material batches.
  • Tolerances depend on the process and material and are stated on the quote.

FAQ

What should a 3D printing quote include?

Each part with quantity, the process and material, layer height and finish, file prep or design time, a test print before a run, your setup fee, a minimum order if it applies, and shipping or pickup.

How do I price a 3D print for a customer?

Add material, machine time, a share for failed prints and your hands-on minutes, then your markup. The free 3D print cost calculator works it out per part and adds a setup fee and minimum.

Should I charge for a test print?

For runs, yes. A first article catches fit problems before twenty parts come off the printer, and it takes real machine time and material. List it as its own line.

What files can customers send for a 3D print quote?

STL and STEP are the most common. With Koira, customers upload STL, STEP, DXF, SVG, PDF and photos through your website quote form, and the files land on the job with the estimate.

Should tolerances be on a 3D printing quote?

Yes, in plain words. Say what accuracy the process and material usually hold, so a customer expecting machined precision knows before ordering.
