Where the money goes
- Digging. A hole outside for the well, by hand or machine.
- Cutting the foundation. Poured walls are saw-cut; block walls need the cut cores filled and a header.
- The window. Fixr puts prefab egress windows at $100 to $800 and custom ones at $500 to $2,000.
- The well and drain. HomeAdvisor puts a window well at $500 to $1,000.
- Inside finish. Drywall returns, trim and paint.
HomeAdvisor and Bob Vila put labor at $40 to $100 an hour, and HomeAdvisor says jobs take three days or more when excavation is needed.
Code basics
Any basement room used as a bedroom needs a way out. Bob Vila notes egress windows must be at least 20 inches wide by 24 inches high, with enough open area to climb through, and the local code sets the full rule, including the sill height and the well size. Your building department inspects the work. Bob Vila puts most permits at $50 to $300.
A worked example
One basement egress window with a well and permits, at the US average: $3,150 to $6,950, about $5,075 typical. Without the well line (when the installer's price includes it), $4,150 typical. Enter a ZIP to scale the 60% labor share to your state.
Quoting egress jobs
- Call 811 first. Mark utilities before digging.
- Say what is included. Well, drain, cover, interior finish.
- Price the wall. Poured, block or stone walls cut differently.
- Plan the dirt. Hauling spoil off site is a real cost.
