Ceramic, porcelain or glass

This Old House lists installed prices a square foot for each tile: ceramic $11 to $39, porcelain $13 to $48 and glass $20 to $100. The calculator uses those as factors against ceramic. Porcelain is denser and better for wet and outdoor areas. Glass is mostly used for backsplashes and accents because of its price.

What the labor covers

This Old House says professional installation adds $3 to $15 a square foot. The work is prep (removing old flooring, backer board, leveling), layout, setting, grout and sealing. Small tiles, mosaics and patterns take longer. HomeAdvisor says demolition and prep add $150 or more.

A worked example

A ceramic bathroom floor at the US average comes to $300 to $2,250, about $1,275 typical. A porcelain kitchen floor is about $2,318 typical. Enter a ZIP to scale the 45% labor share to your state.

Quoting tile jobs

  • Price the prep. Demo, backer board and leveling are often more work than setting.
  • Name the tile and the layout. Herringbone and large-format tile take longer.
  • Waterproofing for wet walls. Put the membrane on its own line.
