The calculator takes the middle of the four ranges: $350 to $1,100 a window, $750 typical. This Old House's survey average is shown for comparison but has no range, so it is not counted.
Frame material
The survey gives an average installed price for each frame, which the calculator uses as a factor against vinyl, the most common choice.
| Frame | Survey average per window | Factor |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | $453 | ×0.96 |
| Vinyl | $472 | ×1.00 |
| Composite | $513 | ×1.09 |
| Wood | $544 | ×1.15 |
| Fiberglass | $564 | ×1.19 |
Window type and glass
Style moves the price more than frame. HomeAdvisor lists single-hung windows at $100 to $400, double-hung at $150 to $650, casements at $150 to $1,000 and bays at $910 to $7,100. In the survey, double-pane windows averaged $529 a window and triple-pane $609. For bays and bows, use the bay window cost guide.
A worked example
Eight vinyl windows at the US average: $2,800 to $8,800, about $6,000 typical, or $750 a window. Switch to fiberglass and add a permit and ten windows come to about $9,137 typical. Enter a ZIP to scale the 40% labor share to your state.
Fixr's own whole-house table puts 11 to 20 windows at $4,950 to $24,000, so a big job often lands below the per-window typical times the count.
Quoting window jobs
- List each opening. Size, style and room on its own line lets the customer drop or add windows.
- Insert or full-frame. Say which, and why.
- Interior trim and paint. Say whether they are included.
- Lead-safe work. Homes built before 1978 need lead-safe practices when old windows come out.
