- Carpet usually costs $3 to $11 a square foot installed on HomeAdvisor's and This Old House's numbers.
- Most of the price is the carpet and pad. Labor is only $0.50 to $1 a square foot.
- Nylon wears better than polyester for a little more. Wool is the top of the range.
- Tear-out, stairs and moving furniture are the extras that change quotes.
Carpet cost by fiber
HomeAdvisor and This Old House print the same table of carpet prices by fiber. The calculator adds pad and labor to each.
| Fiber | Carpet a sq ft | Installed with pad, typical |
|---|---|---|
| Polyester | $1 to $3 | $4.13 |
| Olefin | $1 to $3 | $4.13 |
| Nylon | $2 to $5 | $5.63 |
| Triexta | $3 to $8 | $7.63 |
| Berber | $3 to $20 | $13.63 |
| Wool | $4 to $20 | $14.13 |
Pad and labor
This Old House puts pad at $0.75 to $2 a square foot and labor at $0.50 to $1, and Bob Vila gives the same labor range. A thicker, denser pad makes a mid-grade carpet feel better and last longer. Bob Vila's worked example is a 15 by 15 foot room, 225 square feet, at $7 a square foot: $1,575.
Tear-out, stairs and furniture
Removing old carpet and pad is priced by the square foot: Fixr says $0.50 to $3.10, HomeAdvisor $0.60 to $5.10 and Bob Vila $1 to $5. The calculator uses the middle of the three. Bob Vila puts moving furniture at $25 to $75 a room. HomeAdvisor puts stair carpet removal at $7.50 to $10.50 a step on most quotes, and stairs take longer to install than open floor.
A worked example
A 200 square foot bedroom in polyester comes to $450 to $1,200, about $825 typical. Five hundred square feet of nylon with tear-out and three rooms of furniture is about $4,388 typical. Enter a ZIP to scale the 15% labor share to your state.
