What egress window means
An egress window is a window big enough and low enough for a person to climb out in a fire and for a firefighter to climb in. The code calls it an emergency escape and rescue opening.

Where it matters on a window and door job
Basement bedrooms need one, which is why egress windows come with basement finishing jobs. The price includes cutting the foundation, the window well and drainage, so quote the full system.
What the model code says
- The net clear opening must be at least 5.7 square feet. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
- For grade floor openings, the minimum net clear opening is 5 square feet. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
- The clear opening must be at least 24 inches high and 20 inches wide. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
- The bottom of the clear opening can be no more than 44 inches above the floor. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
