What window fall protection means
Window fall protection limits how far a low, upper story window opens, or adds a release device, so a child cannot fall out.
Also called window opening control device, window stop.
Where it matters on a window and door job
Replacing windows on upper floors can bring this rule into play when sills are low. Order units with opening control devices where it applies, and show the customer how they release.
What the model code says
- It applies where the bottom of an operable window opening is less than 24 inches above the floor and more than 72 inches above the grade outside. (IRC 2021, Chapter 3)
