There are two kinds of leads for painters: the ones you rent and the ones you own. Rented leads arrive the day you pay and stop the day you stop. Owned leads, from reviews, your site, past customers and referrals, take longer to build and then cost almost nothing per job. Below is where each kind comes from for painting, with each platform's rules from its own pages.
- "Painter" is on Google's Local Services list, so painters can buy leads there after screening.
- Shared lead sites charge for the introduction, not the job. Measure them by cost per painting job won.
- Buyers compare painters, and the first clear reply wins most shared leads.
- Owned leads, like reviews, a price on your site and cards to the neighbors, keep working after you stop paying.
Where painting leads come from
Each row is a place painting leads come from, how it charges and our read on the fit for painters.
| Source | Own or rent | How you pay | Fit for painters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile and reviews | Own | Free | Where most people looking for painting start. Reviews that mention interior repaints and the town do the selling. |
| Your own site with a price | Own | Free on a Koira address | A Get a price button answers the first question about painting one room at any hour. |
| Past customers and referrals | Own | A text, an email, a thank-you | Realtors and past customers send the warmest leads you will get. |
| Neighbor postcards | Own | Per card | A freshly painted house that changes the look of the whole street. The homes nearby get a card with that photo the next day. |
| Google Local Services Ads | Rent | Per lead | "Painter" is on Google's eligible list. Works best when your reviews are strong and replies are fast. |
| Angi and HomeAdvisor | Rent | Per match, win or lose | A job like a full exterior repaint can carry a few lead fees that go nowhere; painting one room cannot. |
| Thumbtack and Bark | Rent | Budget or credits | Customers often contact several painters. The first clear price wins most of them. |
| Writing to commercial buyers | Own | Time, or Koira Front Office | One contract with property managers can replace dozens of one-time leads. |
All lead sources compared lists each platform's published prices next to Koira's, with the same columns.
Google Local Services Ads for painters
Google lists "Painter" among the categories eligible for Local Services Ads, so painters can run them once they pass Google's screening. Local Services Ads charge for leads that relate to your business and services, never for clicks. Google says lead prices vary with your location, the job type, the type of lead and your bidding mode. It does not publish a price list.
Google counts a missed call during your business hours as a charged lead if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. Over a 30-day window Google checks lead quality and automatically credits poor, duplicate or invalid leads.
Google orders Local Services ads by bid and by profile quality, which covers your rating, review count, response time, photos and completed verification checks. Some categories need 5 reviews to show at all, and Google recommends 5 or more for everyone. For the rules in full, see Google Local Services Ads for contractors and the setup guide.
When painting leads come in
Lead volume follows the season. For painters it peaks around spring and early fall for exteriors and drops in midwinter, when only interiors move, which changes what a paid lead is worth from month to month.
| Month | Pace | What customers want |
|---|---|---|
| March | Get ready | Exterior bids start coming in |
| April | Busy | Exterior season opens |
| May | Busy | Exterior repaints and deck staining |
| June | Busy | Long days, full exterior schedule |
| September | Busy | Fall exteriors before the cold |
| October | Busy | Last exterior weeks, holiday interiors |
Expect homeowners who collect two or three bids, look hard at photos and pick the painter who seems careful and on time, along with property managers, apartment turnover crews and HOA boards and referrals from realtors, home stagers and remodelers.
Shared lead sites and painting
Angi's 2025 annual report says pros pay lead fees for consumer matches whether or not they end up doing the job. Bark prices each lead in credits, set by the service, how much the job is worth and how many pros are chasing it locally.
Thumbtack says you control your pricing and budget for leads, and that budget determines how many leads you get. It does not publish lead prices on that page.
What decides shared painting leads is speed. Your customers are homeowners who collect two or three bids, look hard at photos and pick the painter who seems careful and on time. If you reply hours later, you paid for an introduction to a customer who already booked someone else. Thumbtack vs Angi puts the two biggest side by side.
Cost per lead vs cost per painting job
The number to watch is cost per booked job, not cost per lead. Take what a source cost you last month, divide by the jobs it booked, and weigh that against what a job like a full exterior repaint leaves after materials and labor.
Run your own numbers through the free cost per lead calculator; it also shows the close rate where a source breaks even. The marketing budget planner works backward from the jobs you want.
Leads you own for painters
- Reviews. Ask everyone, right after they pay, with a link straight to the review form. Google says offering incentives, like free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for reviews is strictly prohibited. Koira's review engine sends the ask and drafts each reply.
- A price on your site. Painting one room priced from your own list, day or night, with booking on the same page (instant quotes).
- The street around each job. A freshly painted house that changes the look of the whole street. Neighbor postcards go to the likely homes around the job the next morning.
- Referrals. From happy customers and from realtors, home stagers and remodelers (referrals).
- Seasonal reminders. A note to past customers before spring and early fall for exteriors (campaigns).
- Commercial buyers. Three short emails to property managers, apartment turnover crews and HOA boards near you, then stop (commercial outreach).
Whoever answers first
A customer comparing painters usually books the first one who replies clearly. It does not matter whether the lead came free or cost you a fee. Koira's receptionist answers on your number and texts missed callers back in about a minute with three open times for painting one room or a look at a full exterior repaint. Koira Grow is $249 a month plus usage at cost: texts, call minutes and emails with nothing added. See the painting answering service guide for live and AI options and their published prices.
