- A new single entry door usually costs $975 to $1,773 installed on Fixr's numbers, $1,353 average.
- Labor is $200 to $800 for three to seven hours. The door itself is where the price moves.
- Steel is the budget pick. Fiberglass and wood run higher, and wrought iron is the top of the range.
- Sidelights add $600 to $2,000 and a new frame $150 to $380, on HomeAdvisor's numbers.
Front door cost by material
The calculator adds Fixr's labor range to the door price. Door prices are the middle of HomeAdvisor's and Bob Vila's ranges.
| Door | HomeAdvisor | Bob Vila | Installed in the calculator, typical |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel | $150 to $1,400 | $100 to $1,000 | $1,163 |
| Fiberglass | $150 to $3,000 | $150 to $5,000 | $2,575 |
| Wood | $500 to $3,000 | $200 to $5,000 | $2,675 |
| Wrought iron | $1,500 to $13,000 | $1,500 to $7,000 | $6,250 |
The ranges are wide because they span stock doors and custom ones. Bob Vila says most fiberglass doors fall between $250 and $2,000, so a stock fiberglass door usually lands well under the calculator's high end.
Prehung door or slab
A prehung door comes hung in its own frame, so the old frame comes out and the new unit goes in square. A slab is just the door, fitted to the existing frame, which only works when that frame is sound and square. HomeAdvisor puts a new frame at $150 to $380, mainly when the door size changes. On an old house with a rotted sill, plan on the frame.
Sidelights, storm doors and hardware
| Extra | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sidelights | $600 to $2,000 | HomeAdvisor |
| New frame | $150 to $380 | HomeAdvisor |
| Storm door, installed | $240 to $720 | Fixr and HomeAdvisor, middle |
| Deadbolt | $15 to $300 | Bob Vila |
| Jamb | $150 to $250 | Bob Vila |
Bob Vila puts an entry door with sidelights at $1,600 to $4,600 as a whole job.
A worked example
A steel entry door with no extras, at the US average: Fixr's labor plus the middle of HomeAdvisor's and Bob Vila's steel door prices gives $325 to $2,000, about $1,163 typical. Choose fiberglass and add a new frame and the typical becomes $2,840. Enter a ZIP to scale the 40% labor share to your state's wages.
Quoting door replacements
- Measure the rough opening, not the door. It decides prehung size and whether the frame changes.
- Separate door, labor and trim. Interior and exterior trim and paint are often forgotten.
- List the hardware. Lockset and deadbolt prices vary more than people expect.
- Offer the storm door as an option.
