- A steel two-car garage door usually costs $800 to $4,250 installed, about $2,525 typical.
- A one-car door is roughly half that. A three-car garage runs $1,400 to $7,200 on HomeAdvisor's table.
- Wood and composite doors cost the most. Vinyl and aluminum sit close to steel.
- An opener is a separate line. Fixr and HomeAdvisor put a new one at about $260 to $570 installed.
Garage door cost by size
Size is the first thing an installer prices. The calculator starts from two published tables of installed prices and takes the middle of them.
| Door | Fixr | HomeAdvisor | Calculator (low / typical / high) |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-car, single door | $600 to $1,500 | $500 to $3,000 | $550 / $1,400 / $2,250 |
| Two-car, double door | $800 to $3,500 | $800 to $5,000 | $800 / $2,525 / $4,250 |
| Three-car garage | Not listed | $1,400 to $7,200 | $1,400 / $4,300 / $7,200 |
Bob Vila prints the same garage-size table as HomeAdvisor, so it is not counted twice. A two-car garage with two single doors costs more than one double door because each door has its own track, springs and labor; Bob Vila lists that setup at $1,200 to $4,900.
How the material changes the price
HomeAdvisor's material table is the only one of the three that prices each material installed, so the calculator uses it as a factor against steel, the most common choice.
| Material | Installed (HomeAdvisor) | Factor against steel, typical |
|---|---|---|
| Steel | $650 to $3,200 | ×1.00 |
| Aluminum | $600 to $2,900 | ×0.91 |
| Vinyl | $800 to $2,500 | ×0.86 |
| Wood | $900 to $4,500 | ×1.40 |
| Composite | $650 to $4,800 | ×1.42 |
Steel is durable and comes insulated or not. Wood looks the part on older homes but needs refinishing. Composite gives the wood look with less upkeep. Today's Homeowner adds that carriage house doors run $1,600 to $13,000, so a custom style can matter more than the material.
Adding a new opener
Most new doors go on with the old opener if it is sound and strong enough. If not, the opener is its own line. Fixr puts a new opener at $300 to $600 installed with $480 average; HomeAdvisor says $218 to $540 with $379 average. The calculator uses the middle of the two: $260 to $570, about $430 typical.
HomeAdvisor puts opener installers at $60 to $80 an hour for two to six hours. Belt drives are quieter than chain drives, and a heavy wood door may need a stronger motor. See the garage door opener cost calculator for drive types and add-ons.
A worked example
A two-car steel door with no opener, at the US average:
- Door, installed. $800 / $2,525 / $4,250.
- Material. Steel, ×1.
- Total. $800 to $4,250, typical $2,525.
Enter a ZIP and the calculator scales the labor share, which we set at 45%, to your state's construction wages from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Materials stay at the national price.
How garage door installers should quote
- One line for the door, one for the opener. Homeowners compare doors, so show the door price on its own.
- Name the model and the insulation. R-value, panel style and windows explain why two quotes differ.
- Price tear-out and haul-away. Say if they are included.
- Offer good, better, best. A plain steel door, an insulated one and a carriage-style one on one estimate.
