- Repointing a low brick wall usually costs $4 to $8.50 a square foot, about $6.25 typical, combining two Fixr guides.
- Above 8 feet, with scaffold, Fixr gives $10 to $25 a square foot, and Bob Vila says to expect at least $10.
- An 8 by 10 foot wall comes to about $320 to $680.
- Small repairs often hit a minimum of around $300.
How much does tuckpointing cost
Repointing (often called tuckpointing) means grinding out worn mortar joints and packing them with new mortar. It is priced by the square foot of wall, and height matters most because tall walls need scaffold.
| Guide | Typical job | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Fixr, tuckpointing | $1,500 to $2,500, about $2,000 | $5 to $10 up to 8 ft; $10 to $25 above |
| Fixr, brick repair | Repointing $8 to $12 | Tuckpointing $3 to $7 for the first 10 ft |
| Bob Vila | $500 to $2,500, about $1,500 | $5 to $25 |
For walls up to about 8 feet we combine Fixr's two guides: low is the average of their lows, high the average of their highs, typical the average of their midpoints. That gives $4 to $8.50, typical $6.25 a square foot. Above 8 feet we use Fixr's $10 to $25.
Chimneys, walls and foundations
Fixr's tuckpointing guide also prices common jobs as a whole:
| Job | Fixr range |
|---|---|
| Fireplace, about 20 sq ft | $100 to $500 |
| Wall, 8 x 10 ft | $400 to $2,500 |
| Chimney | $500 to $2,500 |
| Basement | $1,600 to $8,000 |
| Foundation | $5,000 to $25,000 |
Chimneys cost more than their area suggests because of roof access and height. Use the "over 8 ft" setting for chimney work.
A worked example: a wall with a tall gable
A side wall of 200 square feet, of which 50 square feet is gable above 8 feet.
- Lower 150 sq ft. × $4 / $6.25 / $8.50 = $600 / $938 / $1,275.
- Upper 50 sq ft. × $10 / $17.50 / $25 = $500 / $875 / $1,250.
- Total. $1,100 to $2,525, about $1,813 typical.
How masons price repointing
Price repointing from your own time per square foot, by joint width and mortar hardness, with scaffold days on their own line and a minimum for small patches. Fixr's brick repair guide puts a mason's hourly rate at $45 to $85. Our labor rate calculator turns your costs into your own hourly number, and how to price masonry work covers patios and walls too. Send it as an estimate the customer signs on their phone.
