What a roofing workmanship warranty is for
Homeowners rarely know that a roof has two warranties: the manufacturer's on the shingles and yours on the installation. When a new roof leaks, the first question is whether details like flashing and nailing were done right, and that is what your workmanship warranty covers. A clear written warranty sets how long you stand behind the work, what counts, and what does not, such as storm damage.
What to put in a roofing workmanship warranty
- Your labor warranty period, from the completion date.
- That it covers leaks caused by installation.
- How it relates to the shingle manufacturer's warranty.
- Exclusions: storm, hail, wind beyond rating, foot traffic, other trades.
- What voids it: unpaid balance, alterations by others.
- How to make a claim and how fast you respond.
What a roofing warranty usually leaves out
- Damage from hail, falling trees or wind beyond the shingle rating.
- Leaks from satellite dishes or solar mounts added by others.
- Ice dams caused by attic insulation or ventilation you did not install.
- Gutters, skylights and chimneys not replaced as part of the job.
- Normal weathering and color change of shingles.
How to fill it in
- Fill in the customer, the job and the date the work finished.
- Set your warranty period.
- Check what is and is not covered for this job.
- Print it for the walkthrough, or download Word to send with the final invoice.
