What outgassing means
Outgassing is air, moisture or oil trapped in porous metal escaping during the cure and leaving pinholes or bubbles in the finish. Cast aluminum and cast iron parts are the usual offenders.
Also called pinholing, outgas bubbles.
Where it matters on a powder coating job
Shops prevent it by baking the bare part before coating so the gas comes out first, or by using an outgas forgiving powder. Ask what a part is made of when a customer calls, because a cast part that needs a preheat bake costs more oven time than the same size in sheet steel.
