What film build means
Film build is how thick the cured powder coat is, measured in mils, or thousandths of an inch, with a dry film thickness gauge. The powder maker lists the range each product is meant to be sprayed at.
Also called dry film thickness, mil thickness, DFT.
Where it matters on a powder coating job
Too thin and the color looks patchy and protects less; too thick and you get orange peel, threads that no longer fit and edges that chip. Two coat finishes like a base plus clear double the build, the powder and the booth time, so price them as two coats.
