- Rewiring usually costs $3 to $5 a square foot of home on HomeAdvisor's numbers and $3 to $6 on Fixr's.
- HomeAdvisor puts a 2,000 square foot house at $6,000 to $10,000.
- A panel upgrade, permits and inspections are separate lines that add up.
- Opening and patching walls is part of the job; plaster walls take longer.

| 2,200 sq ft | $7,286 to $13,257 |
| 3,000 sq ft | $9,936 to $18,078 |
The calculator uses the middle of HomeAdvisor's $3 to $5 and Fixr's $3 to $6 a square foot.
Rough-in and new construction
HomeAdvisor says wiring a new home costs $3 to $5 a square foot and the electrical rough-in alone $2 to $4, because walls are open. Rewiring an old home costs more for the same wire because of the opening and patching.
Panel, permits and inspections
HomeAdvisor puts permits at $250 to $900 and inspections at $150 to $250. A rewire often goes with a panel upgrade; the calculator uses the panel cost guide's combined $1,300 to $3,000.
A worked example
Rewiring a 2,000 square foot home at the US average comes to $6,000 to $11,000, about $8,500 typical. With a panel upgrade and permits, about $11,225. Enter a ZIP to scale the 65% labor share.
Quoting a rewire
- Walk every room. Count devices and circuits.
- Who patches. Drywall and paint are often another trade.
- Phase it. Progress payments on the estimate.
