How we got this

  1. Labor per visit(1.25 on site + 0.5 driving) × $32.00 = $56.00
  2. Cost per visit$56.00 + $25.00 parts = $81.00
  3. Repair discount15% off $300 of repairs = $45.00The discount is money you give up on work you would have sold anyway, so it is a cost of the plan.
  4. Cost per member a year2 × $81.00 + $45.00 = $207.00
  5. Price$207.00 ÷ (1 − 15% overhead − 20% profit) = $318.46, quoted as $320
  6. Members one tech can serve1,500 hrs ÷ 3.5 hrs per member = 428
  7. Members whose fees pay a tech$66,560 tech cost ÷ $177.00 left for labor per member = 377A full year of a tech is 2,080 paid hours × $32.00. Repairs and installs sold on plan visits come on top.

Why duct and dryer vent plans work

A duct and dryer vent plan books the dryer vent every year and the ducts on a longer cycle, so a one-time cleaning turns into a customer you see every spring.

Dryer vents fill with lint every year, and a clogged vent is the reason a dryer takes two cycles. Ducts load up more slowly. A plan sells the yearly vent visit and spreads the duct cleaning across the years in between, so the customer pays a steady amount and you get a route of homes that already know you.

Three tiers to offer

Three tiers give the customer a choice that is not yes or no.

TierWhat it includesExample priceBilled monthly
Vent careDryer vent cleaning once a year; Airflow checked at the dryer; Bird guard checked at the exit$90 to $163, typical $126 a yearAbout $11 a month, typical
Vent and ductsDryer vent cleaning once a year; Whole-home duct cleaning every third year; Before and after photos$190 to $379, typical $285 a yearAbout $24 a month, typical
Whole home airDryer vent cleaning once a year; Whole-home duct cleaning every third year; Furnace and blower cleaning each year; Priority booking$250 to $529, typical $390 a yearAbout $32 a month, typical

From the sourced bands in the air duct cleaning cost calculator and the dryer vent cleaning cost calculator, for an example 2,000 sq ft home with one HVAC system and a ground floor dryer vent: a vent cleaning $90 to $163, typical $126, a duct cleaning $300 to $650, typical $475 (spread over three years in the plan, as an example cycle) and a furnace and blower cleaning $60 to $150, typical $105.

What to put in the plan terms

Write the terms down before the first customer signs, and use the same words on your site, the estimate and the invoice:

  • Which vents and how many feet of vent run are covered
  • How many HVAC systems the duct cleaning includes
  • What counts as a problem vent, like nests or crushed hose, and its price
  • Billing and renewal
  • Cancellation

A sales script that does not sound like one

The best moment to offer a plan is right after a good visit, while the customer is looking at the work. Here is how it can go:

  • You: Here is the camera view from before and after. That lint was most of the way across the pipe.
  • Customer: No wonder the dryer was slow. How often does that happen?
  • You: Every year with a family your size. Most of our customers put the vent on a yearly plan, and some add the ducts every few years.
  • Customer: What does that cost?
  • You: It comes to a small amount each month on your card. I can add it to today's invoice and put next year's visit on the calendar.

Say the price as a monthly amount, and offer to add it to today's invoice. Then stop talking.

Price your own plan

The examples above are national numbers. Your plan price should come from your own labor, drive time, parts and overhead. The calculator above does that math for any trade: visits, hours, parts, the member discount and your margin. For the per-visit prices, the air duct cleaning cost calculator has the sourced ranges.
