The policies a siding business carries
Siding work is ladder and staging work, which is why workers' comp for siding installers runs higher than most installation trades in the Insureon figures. Water behind new siding and damage to windows and landscaping are the property claims to plan for.
| Policy | Average a month |
|---|---|
| General liability | $100 |
| Tools and equipment | $41 |
| Commercial auto | $299 |
| Workers' compensation | $317 |
| Surety or license bond | $9 |
| Commercial umbrella | $92 |
Averages are what Insureon's customers who are siding installation contractors pay, from Insureon's cost page; most of its customers have fewer than five employees. Across all its small business customers, general liability runs $265 to $3,030 a year.
Claims siding contractors plan for
- Water gets behind new siding and rots the sheathing
- A panel blows off in a windstorm
- A ladder falls against a window
- Debris from tear-off damages landscaping
Ask your agent, in these words:
- Would my policy pay if water gets behind new siding and rots the sheathing?
- Would my policy pay if a panel blows off in a windstorm?
- Would my policy pay if a ladder falls against a window?
- Would my policy pay if debris from tear-off damages landscaping?
Name the work you sell
A policy covers the work you describe on the application. From the siding services list, name each of these and ask whether any is excluded: vinyl siding; fiber cement siding; engineered wood siding; stone veneer; tear off old siding; house wrap; painting new siding; trim wraps and soffit; storm damage panel replacement; loose or cracked siding repair; caulk and seal around openings.
Brakes, pump jacks, nailers and the dump trailer are the items to list. On the tools list, the items to list on the policy are portable aluminum brake; fiber cement shears or a dust-collecting saw; pump jack system with planks; dump trailer; moisture meter, and from the starter kit, extension ladder and ladder jacks or pump jacks; multi-position ladder; siding nailer and a compressor; aviation snips, left and right; siding removal tool (zip tool).
State rules in the license
Siding work often falls under the general contractor rules. Our general contractor license guide lists the insurance and bond line for each of 48 states from the boards' own pages.
Workers' comp and bonds
The SBA says every business with employees must carry workers' compensation, unemployment and disability insurance. Insureon's average for siding installation contractors is $317 a month, priced per $100 of payroll. A bond protects the state or the customer, not you; Insureon puts its yearly cost at a share of the bond amount:
| Bond amount | Estimated yearly cost |
|---|---|
| $5,000 | $25 to $500 |
| $10,000 | $50 to $1,000 |
| $50,000 | $250 to $5,000 |
Certificates of insurance
Homeowners with insurance claims, HOAs and builders ask for a certificate first. Keep a PDF on your phone so you can send it the day they ask.
