What soffit means
Soffit is the finished underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia and the wall. Vented soffit lets air into the attic.
Where it matters on a roofing job
Soffit vents are the intake half of attic ventilation, so a reroof that adds ridge vent without checking the soffit only does half the job. Painted wood soffit rots where gutters overflow; vinyl and aluminum soffit are the usual replacements and are priced by the linear foot.
