What three-tab shingle means
A three-tab shingle is a flat asphalt strip shingle cut into three tabs along its lower edge, so it reads as a uniform grid on the roof.
Also called 3-tab shingle, strip shingle.
Where it matters on a roofing job
It is lighter and cheaper than an architectural shingle and has mostly been dropped from new roofs, but you still match it on repairs. When a homeowner asks for a patch, check whether the shingle is still made; if not, set expectations about the color match.
What the model code says
- The code minimum is four fasteners per strip shingle, or more if the maker asks. (IRC 2021, Chapter 9)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for three-tab shingle before you quote.
