What roofing square means
A square is the unit roofers use to measure and price roof area. Shingles are sold by the square, and labor and tear-off are quoted by it.
Also called square, squares.
Where it matters on a roofing job
Every roofing estimate starts with squares. Measure the true sloped area, not the footprint, then add waste for hips, valleys and cuts. Quoting by the square keeps you honest with a homeowner comparing bids, as long as everyone is counting the same roof.
