What roof pitch means
Pitch is how steep a roof is, written as inches of rise for every foot of horizontal run, such as six in twelve. Slope and pitch are used the same way on most job sites.
Also called roof slope, rise over run.
Where it matters on a roofing job
Pitch changes three things on an estimate: the true roof area compared with the footprint, which materials are allowed, and labor, because steep roofs need harnesses and staging and go slower. Get pitch right before you price anything else.
The numbers, with sources
- Asphalt shingles are only allowed on slopes of 2 in 12 or steeper. (IRC 2021, Chapter 9)
- Workers on a surface with an unprotected edge 6 feet or more above a lower level need fall protection. (OSHA)
What it costs
The roof replacement cost guide has the typical job at $9,350 and the usual range at $5,800 to $13,000. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price. The roof measurement tool prices a job line by line.
