What starter strip means
A starter strip is the first course of shingles, laid along the eaves and often the rakes, with its sealant line at the edge. It fills the gaps under the first visible course and seals the edge down.
Also called starter shingles, starter course.
Where it matters on a roofing job
Skipped or upside down starter is a classic cause of blow offs at the eaves. Most shingle warranties name the starter product. Measure eaves and rakes in linear feet for it, separately from field shingles.
