What drip edge means
Drip edge is the bent metal strip installed along the eaves and rakes of a roof. It kicks water off the edge and away from the fascia and holds the shingle line straight.
Also called drip edge flashing, eave metal.
Where it matters on a roofing job
Inspectors look for drip edge on shingle roofs, and a missing or short piece shows up as stained fascia and rotted deck edges a few years later. Carry it as a linear foot line on every reroof estimate, and say in the scope whether the old metal is being replaced or reused.
What the model code says
- Shingle roofs need drip edge at both the eaves and the rakes. (IRC 2021, Chapter 9)
- Pieces overlap at least 2 inches, extend at least 1/4 inch below the sheathing and reach at least 2 inches back onto the deck. (IRC 2021, Chapter 9)
- Fasteners go no more than 12 inches apart. (IRC 2021, Chapter 9)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for drip edge before you quote.
What it costs
