- An active radon mitigation system usually costs $786 to $1,274, HomeAdvisor says, $1,028 on average.
- Bob Vila puts crawl space systems at $800 to $3,000; larger or complex homes can reach $3,000.
- Test before and after. HomeAdvisor puts a professional test at $150 to $800.
- The fan runs all the time and adds $30 to $300 a year to the power bill, Bob Vila says.
What a radon system costs
HomeAdvisor puts active systems at $786 to $1,274 with $1,028 average; Bob Vila says $771 to $1,185 with $978 average. The calculator takes the middle of the two. HomeAdvisor says passive systems cost $500 to $2,500.
How mitigation works
Sub-slab depressurization is the common method: a pipe through the slab and a fan pull soil gas from under the house and vent it above the roof. Bob Vila puts sub-slab systems at $800 to $2,500. Crawl spaces get a sealed plastic membrane with the pipe under it. Bob Vila says radon fans cost $100 to $300.
Testing
Bob Vila says radon test kits run $12 to $250 and a professional test $150 to $800. A long-term test gives a better average. The EPA sets the level at which it recommends fixing; test again after the system goes in.
A worked example
An active sub-slab system at the US average comes to $779 to $1,230, about $1,003 typical, or about $1,566 with a test and permit. Enter a ZIP to scale the 55% labor share.
