Buying leads is the fast way to fill a deck calendar, and building them is the cheap way. Most deck builders need some of each: paid leads for a new deck with stairs and railings in a slow week, owned leads for steady new deck builds. Here is every common source and what each platform says about its own pricing and rules.
- Decks is not named on Google's Local Services list as we read it.
- Shared lead sites charge for the introduction, not the job. Measure them by cost per deck job won.
- Buyers compare deck builders, and the first clear reply wins most shared leads.
- Owned leads, like reviews, a price on your site and cards to the neighbors, keep working after you stop paying.
Where deck leads come from
Each row is a place deck leads come from, how it charges and our read on the fit for deck builders.
| Source | Own or rent | How you pay | Fit for deck builders |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile and reviews | Own | Free | Where most people looking for deck start. Reviews that mention new deck builds and the town do the selling. |
| Your own site with a price | Own | Free on a Koira address | A Get a price button answers the first question about staining a small deck at any hour. |
| Past customers and referrals | Own | A text, an email, a thank-you | Deck cleaning and restaining brings people back with no lead fee at all. |
| Neighbor postcards | Own | Per card | A new deck behind the house, which the neighbors see over the fence all summer. The homes nearby get a card with that photo the next day. |
| Google Local Services Ads | Rent | Per lead | Decks is not named on Google's eligible list as we read it. |
| Angi and HomeAdvisor | Rent | Per match, win or lose | A job like a new deck with stairs and railings can carry a few lead fees that go nowhere; staining a small deck cannot. |
| Thumbtack and Bark | Rent | Budget or credits | Customers often contact several deck builders. The first clear price wins most of them. |
| Writing to commercial buyers | Own | Time, or Koira Front Office | One contract with property managers can replace dozens of one-time leads. |
All lead sources compared lists each platform's published prices next to Koira's, with the same columns.
Google Local Services Ads for deck builders
Decks is not named on Google's list of Local Services categories as we read it on Google's own pages. Check the list for the category closest to your work before you plan on it. If none fits your new deck builds, the money is better spent on what Google ranks for free. Google's help page on local ranking says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence (it also calls the last one popularity): how well your profile matches the search, how far you are from the searcher and how well known your business is.

When deck leads come in
Lead volume follows the season. For deck builders it peaks around spring and early summer and drops in midwinter, which changes what a paid lead is worth from month to month.
| Month | Pace | What customers want |
|---|---|---|
| February | Get ready | Design visits and material choices |
| March | Get ready | Quotes and permits |
| April | Busy | Builds start |
| May | Busy | Decks before Memorial Day |
| June | Busy | Summer builds and railings |
| September | Get ready | Fall builds and replacements |
Expect homeowners who want more time outside, who compare wood and composite and want a design, a price and a start date, along with property managers, HOAs and apartment communities and referrals from landscapers, masons, pool builders and home inspectors.
Shared lead sites and deck
Angi's 2025 annual report describes its lead revenue as fees paid by pros for consumer matches, regardless of whether the pro ultimately provides the requested service. On Bark, the credits needed to contact a customer depend on the service, the value of the job and local supply and demand.
Thumbtack's pro page says there is no charge to join, no annual fees and no membership fees.
Shared leads reward the fastest reply. Your customers are homeowners who want more time outside, who compare wood and composite and want a design, a price and a start date; reach them while they are still deciding, or the fee buys a conversation someone else already had. Thumbtack vs Angi puts the two biggest side by side.
Cost per lead vs cost per deck job
The number to watch is cost per booked job, not cost per lead. Take what a source cost you last month, divide by the jobs it booked, and weigh that against what a job like a new deck with stairs and railings leaves after materials and labor.
Run your own numbers through the free cost per lead calculator; it also shows the close rate where a source breaks even. The marketing budget planner works backward from the jobs you want.
Leads you own for deck builders
- Reviews. Ask everyone, right after they pay, with a link straight to the review form. Google strictly prohibits offering incentives such as free or discounted goods or services for reviews. Koira's review engine sends the ask and drafts each reply.
- A price on your site. Staining a small deck priced from your own list, day or night, with booking on the same page (instant quotes).
- The street around each job. A new deck behind the house, which the neighbors see over the fence all summer. Neighbor postcards go to the likely homes around the job the next morning.
- Referrals. From happy customers and from landscapers, masons, pool builders and home inspectors (referrals).
- Repeat work. Deck cleaning and restaining, reminded before the season and sold on the first visit (campaigns, maintenance plans).
- Commercial buyers. Three short emails to property managers, HOAs and apartment communities near you, then stop (commercial outreach).
Whoever answers first
A customer comparing deck builders usually books the first one who replies clearly. It does not matter whether the lead came free or cost you a fee. Koira's receptionist answers on your number and texts missed callers back in about a minute with three open times for staining a small deck or a look at a new deck with stairs and railings. On Grow you pay $249 a month, plus the texts, call minutes and emails at cost. See the deck answering service guide for live and AI options and their published prices.
