The policies a water treatment business carries
Water treatment companies cut into the plumbing, so a leak from a new softener or filter housing is the claim to plan for. A system that does not fix the water problem it was sold for is the other.
| Policy | Average a month |
|---|---|
| General liability | $83 |
| Tools and equipment | $42 |
| Commercial auto | $270 |
| Workers' compensation | $160 |
| Surety or license bond | $9 |
Averages are what Insureon's customers among contractors as a group (it publishes no separate figures for water treatment) pay, from Insureon's cost page; most of its customers have fewer than five employees. Across all its small business customers, general liability runs $265 to $3,030 a year.
Claims water treatment companies plan for
- A softener bypass leaks overnight
- Brine overflows onto a finished basement floor
- A system does not fix the iron stains it was sold for
- A well pump fails after your service visit
Ask your agent, in these words:
- Would my policy pay if a softener bypass leaks overnight?
- Would my policy pay if brine overflows onto a finished basement floor?
- Would my policy pay if a system does not fix the iron stains it was sold for?
- Would my policy pay if a well pump fails after your service visit?
Name the work you sell
A policy covers the work you describe on the application. From the water treatment services list, name each of these and ask whether any is excluded: water softener, single tank; water softener, dual tank; salt-free conditioner; whole-house reverse osmosis; water test; radon test; well water test; softener service visit; filter change; under-sink ro filter change; salt delivery; well pump service.
Test equipment, tools and the systems on the truck are the items to list. On the tools list, the items to list on the policy are well pump and pressure test gauges; soldering kit and torch; chlorinator and shock kit for wells; tablet for water test reports; trailer or racks for tanks, and from the starter kit, total hardness test kit; water test strips or a multi-parameter kit; tds meter; pipe cutters for copper and pex; pex crimp or expansion tool.
State rules in the license
Water Treatment and Well work often falls under the plumbing rules. Our plumbing license guide lists the insurance and bond line for each of 49 states from the boards' own pages.
Workers' comp and bonds
The SBA says every business with employees must carry workers' compensation, unemployment and disability insurance. Insureon's average for contractors as a group is $160 a month, priced per $100 of payroll. A bond protects the state or the customer, not you; Insureon puts its yearly cost at a share of the bond amount:
| Bond amount | Estimated yearly cost |
|---|---|
| $5,000 | $25 to $500 |
| $10,000 | $50 to $1,000 |
| $50,000 | $250 to $5,000 |
Certificates of insurance
Builders and property managers ask for a certificate before install. Keep a PDF on your phone so you can send it the day they ask.
