The policies a pool service business carries
Pool service mixes strong chemicals with water people swim in. A dosing mistake, a slip on a wet deck or damage to equipment are the claims pool companies plan for.
| Policy | Average a month |
|---|---|
| General liability | $95 |
| Commercial auto | $250 |
| Workers' compensation | $114 |
| Surety or license bond | $9 |
| Business owner's policy | $81 |
| Commercial umbrella | $76 |
Averages are what Insureon's customers who are pool cleaners pay, from Insureon's cost page; most of its customers have fewer than five employees. Across all its small business customers, general liability runs $265 to $3,030 a year.
Claims pool service companies plan for
- A chemical dosing mistake irritates swimmers' skin and eyes
- A slip on a wet deck during service
- A pump you serviced burns out and floods the equipment pad
- Acid splashes onto a stone deck
Ask your agent, in these words:
- Would my policy pay if a chemical dosing mistake irritates swimmers' skin and eyes?
- Would my policy pay if a slip on a wet deck during service?
- Would my policy pay if a pump you serviced burns out and floods the equipment pad?
- Would my policy pay if acid splashes onto a stone deck?
Name the work you sell
A policy covers the work you describe on the application. From the pool service services list, name each of these and ask whether any is excluded: weekly full service; monthly service; chemical-only service; pool opening; pool closing; green pool recovery; filter clean; pump or motor replacement; heater diagnosis; automation and salt system install.
Chemicals on the truck call for safe storage and a commercial auto policy that covers what you carry. On the tools list, the items to list on the policy are digital photometer test kit; pool vacuum or robot for green pools; submersible pump; multimeter; truck rack or trailer for chemical drums, and from the starter kit, telescoping pole with skimmer net and brush; vacuum head and hose; water test kit with reagents; leaf rake and tile brush; chemical dispenser and measuring tools.
State rules in the license
Most states do not license pool service work as a trade of its own, so there is usually no state insurance minimum tied to a license. Cities and commercial customers can still set their own.
Workers' comp and bonds
The SBA says every business with employees must carry workers' compensation, unemployment and disability insurance. Insureon's average for pool cleaners is $114 a month, priced per $100 of payroll. A bond protects the state or the customer, not you; Insureon puts its yearly cost at a share of the bond amount:
| Bond amount | Estimated yearly cost |
|---|---|
| $5,000 | $25 to $500 |
| $10,000 | $50 to $1,000 |
| $50,000 | $250 to $5,000 |
Certificates of insurance
HOAs, apartment complexes and hotels ask for a certificate before you take on their pools. Keep a PDF on your phone so you can send it the day they ask.
