Card fees on Koira, explained

When a customer pays you by card through Koira, two things come out of the payment: Stripe's processing and Koira's share. Here is what each one is, what it is on your plan, and where you see it.

Quick answer

Card payments land in your own Stripe account. Stripe's processing comes out of each one (2.9% + 30¢ for a US card), and Koira keeps 2% on Office, 1% on Grow and 0.5% on Front Office. Every payment in the app shows both, and what you get.

Step by step

  1. Turn on card payments

Go to Settings and open Getting paid. Under Cards, through Stripe, tap Set up card payments. Koira opens a Stripe account in your name and Stripe's own steps (who you are, your bank) run inside Koira.

  2. Check your rate

Once it is on, the same card says what Koira keeps on your plan: On your plan Koira keeps 2% of each card payment. Stripe's own processing comes out too.

  3. Read it on each payment

Every card payment in the app shows what Stripe kept, what Koira kept and what you get, read off the payment itself.

The two parts of a card payment

Stripe's processing. Stripe moves the money, and Stripe's published rate is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction for domestic cards. Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards. This is Stripe's price, the same one Stripe lists for any business.

Koira's share. Koira keeps a percent of each card payment, set by your plan.

PlanMonthly priceStripe processing, US cardKoira's share
OfficeFree2.9% + 30¢2%
Grow$249 plus usage at cost2.9% + 30¢1%
Front Office$499 flat, usage included2.9% + 30¢0.5%

A $500 payment, worked out

A customer pays a $500 invoice with a US card.

PlanStripe (2.9% + 30¢)KoiraYou get
Office$14.80$10.00 (2%)$475.20
Grow$14.80$5.00 (1%)$480.20
Front Office$14.80$2.50 (0.5%)$482.70

Stripe's part is 2.9% of $500 ($14.50) plus 30¢. Koira's part is the plan's percent of $500.

Tips

If you switch on Tips on the pay page for an invoice, the customer can add a tip when paying by card. Koira's share is never taken on the tip; it is worked out on the invoice amount only.

Payments with no Koira share

Cash, check, Zelle, Venmo and Cash App never touch Stripe, so neither Stripe nor Koira takes anything. Record them on the invoice with Record payment and the method. Your Zelle, Venmo and Cash App handles, set under Getting paid, show on the pay page next to the card button.

Where the money goes

Card payments go straight to your own Stripe account, not Koira's, and Stripe pays them out to your bank. Open Payouts and bank under Getting paid to see payouts or change the bank. If Stripe still needs your bank details, the card says so: cards work, but payouts wait until the bank is in.

Thinking about passing the fee on? Read the credit card surcharge rules first; they differ by state and by card network.
