What TIG welding means
TIG welding uses a tungsten electrode that does not melt, a separate filler rod fed by hand and an inert shielding gas, usually argon. The welder controls the heat with a foot pedal or a torch switch.
Also called GTAW, gas tungsten arc welding, heliarc.
Where it matters on a welding job
It gives the cleanest, most precise welds and is the usual choice for aluminum, stainless steel and thin or visible work. It is also much slower than wire welding, so TIG jobs need more hours on the quote and often a higher shop rate.
