What MIG welding means
MIG welding feeds a solid wire electrode through the gun from a spool while shielding gas from a cylinder protects the molten weld. The welder pulls the trigger and the wire keeps coming, which makes it fast and easy to learn.
Also called GMAW, gas metal arc welding, wire feed welding.
Where it matters on a welding job
It is the workhorse for steel fabrication, trailers and sheet metal repair in the shop. Wind blows the shielding gas away, so for outdoor field repairs most welders switch to stick or flux core, and the quote should note which process the job needs.
