What flux core welding means
Flux core welding runs on a wire feeder like MIG, but the wire is a hollow tube filled with flux. Self shielded wire makes its own protection and needs no gas cylinder, while gas shielded flux core uses a gas as well.
Also called FCAW, flux cored arc welding, gasless wire.
Where it matters on a welding job
It lays down metal quickly on thicker steel and holds up in wind, so it suits outdoor structural work and heavy repairs. It leaves slag and more spatter than solid wire, which means cleanup time before paint or powder coat.
