What dormer means
A dormer is a small structure that projects out of a sloped roof, with its own roof and usually a window. It adds headroom and light to an attic room.
Where it matters on a roofing job
Every dormer adds valleys, sidewall flashing and cut shingles, so roofers add time and waste for each one. Building a new dormer is framing work that needs a permit and often an engineer, and it is priced very differently from reroofing one.
What it costs
The dormer installation cost guide has the typical job at $18,000 and the usual range at $9,000 to $27,500. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
