What volt means
A volt is the unit of electrical pressure that pushes current through a circuit. Homes get a split service with lower voltage for most outlets and higher voltage for big appliances.
Also called voltage.
Where it matters on a electrical job
Voltage decides which circuits an appliance needs. Low voltage at the end of a long run causes dim lights and struggling motors, which is a voltage drop problem worth measuring before swapping parts.
What the model code says
- Dwelling systems covered by the optional load method are three-wire, 120/240-volt, single-phase. (IRC 2021, Chapter 36)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for volt before you quote.
What it costs
Jobs that involve volt are priced in the electrical outlet installation cost guide: about $190 typical, usually $130 to $260. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price. The voltage drop calculator prices a job line by line.
