What tamper-resistant receptacle means
A tamper-resistant receptacle has internal shutters that only open when both prongs of a plug push in together, so a child cannot push an object into one slot.
Also called TR outlet.
Where it matters on a electrical job
They are required for new and replaced receptacles in most dwelling locations, so stock TR devices and stop carrying standard ones. Customers sometimes think they are broken; a word at the walkthrough avoids a callback.
What the model code says
- In the covered areas, 15 and 20 amp, 125 and 250 volt nonlocking receptacles must be listed tamper-resistant. (IRC 2021, Chapter 40)
