What receptacle means
A receptacle is the device at an outlet that a plug goes into. Electricians say outlet for the point on the wiring and receptacle for the device.
Also called outlet, plug.
Where it matters on a electrical job
Room additions and remodels have to meet spacing rules for receptacles, which decides how many you install. Count them from the rule, not from the customer's sketch.
What the model code says
- No point along the floor line of a wall space may be more than 6 feet from a receptacle. (IRC 2021, Chapter 39)
- A receptacle for a specific appliance, such as laundry equipment, goes within 6 feet of where the appliance sits. (IRC 2021, Chapter 39)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for receptacle before you quote.
What it costs
Koira's electrical outlet installation cost guide puts a typical job at $190, with most between $130 to $260. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
