What AFCI breaker means
An AFCI is an arc-fault circuit interrupter: a breaker or receptacle that recognizes the electrical signature of arcing, like a loose or damaged wire, and shuts the circuit off.
Also called arc-fault circuit interrupter, AFCI.
Where it matters on a electrical job
AFCI protection is required on many dwelling circuits, and extending or modifying an existing circuit can trigger the requirement too. Nuisance tripping is a common callback; it often points to a shared neutral or a real wiring fault.
What the model code says
- The code defines an AFCI as a device that recognizes characteristics unique to arcing and de-energizes the circuit when an arc-fault is detected. (IRC 2021, Chapter 35)
