What electrical panel means
The electrical panel is the box where the service or feeder splits into branch circuits, each protected by a breaker.
Also called panelboard, breaker box, load center.
Where it matters on a electrical job
Panel upgrades are among the best paying jobs for a small electrical shop. Some older panel brands are known problems that insurers and inspectors flag. Note the brand, the rating and the free spaces on every visit, since that is the start of the next quote.
What the model code says
- The code defines a panelboard as a panel or group of panel units including buses and automatic overcurrent devices. (IRC 2021, Chapter 35)
