What bonding means
Bonding is connecting metal parts together with conductors so they stay at the same electrical potential and any fault current has a clear path.
Where it matters on a electrical job
Pools, hot tubs, gas piping and metal water pipes all have bonding rules, and inspectors check them closely. Bonding is a separate line from the equipment wiring on a pool or spa job.
What the model code says
- The code defines bonded as connected to establish electrical continuity and conductivity. (IRC 2021, Chapter 35)
Check which code edition your building department enforces for bonding before you quote.
What it costs
The electrical panel upgrade cost guide has the typical job at $2,150 and the usual range at $1,300 to $3,000. The guide shows its sources and what moves the price.
